Fiction and Fact

Two women at work were discussing John Travolta and how he is a Scientologist.  The one woman expressed disappointment that he was no longer a Christian and incredulity that anyone would follow Scientology.  You see, L. Ron Hubbard just made it up one day.  It’s not even a real religion….

She meant this, I assume, in contrast to Christianity which was not made up at all.

I am certainly no great fan of L. Ron Hubbard; but now I’m wondering if he is so very different from Jesus or Mohammad or Buddha or Joseph Smith.  Didn’t they all pretty much just make up their own religion afterall?  Although, to be perfectly fair, Jesus didn’t write any of it down, he just takes all the credit in the story.  So, maybe L. Ron Hubbard is more like Paul or Mark or John.  Muhammad didn’t really write any of it down either because he was illiterate  but he did specifically dictate his communications with god for others to write down.  And I suppose, if you’re splitting hairs, Buddhism isn’t really a religion so much as a philosophy, but I digress.  The point is, they’re all fucking made up.  And they’re all essentially just bullshit.

How does blood create forgiveness?

How did a tribe of Jews get to America before anyone but the Indians knew America existed and not leave a trace of themselves in any historical record or artifact?

If there is only one god, why is he so fucking jealous and insecure?

If we can only achieve Nirvana by purging ourselves of lust and desire, why would we care about getting to Nirvana when we have achieved it?

Iff only 144,000 people are promised a place in Heaven, why would I want to keep converting new people?

How does burning a red candle really make any difference to the universe than burning a yellow one?

Ok, folks - just because you think you’re right, doesn’t mean that everyone else is wrong.  It doesn’t even make you right necessarily.  The ultimate truth is that no one actually knows the truth.  Picking one specific truth and closing your mind to all others is irresponsible and illogical.

Happy June 11 everyone.
